Chevrolet Chevelle SS. Description and characteristics

In mid-February 2013 in Florida at the Daytina International Speedway, Chevrolet organized the official presentation of the first rear-wheel-drive sports sedan since 1996 called SS (Super Sport), which is a redesigned version of the Australian four-door Holden Commodore VF and received a V8 gasoline engine from the Corvette supercar.

In September 2015, the car underwent a slight “rejuvenation” procedure and received an upgraded exhaust system, and at the end of 2017 it may “leave the scene” simultaneously with the original model.

With its appearance, the Chevrolet SS exudes power and aggression, but at the same time from the outside it looks like a regular family sedan with classic three-volume proportions. A pompous "face" with evil lighting technology, a double cut of a radiator grille and a powerful front "apron", a dynamic silhouette with a long hood and "protruding" wheel arches, a muscular stern with beautiful lanterns and a "quartet" of exhaust pipes - the car looks really good and harmoniously folded.

On external chevrolet size SS belongs to the segment of full-size cars and is 4966 mm long, 1897 mm wide and 1470 mm high. The wheelbase of the four-door is 2916 mm of the total length, and its "combat" weight varies from 1796 to 1803 kg, depending on the modification.

Interior american sedan decorated in an attractive and modern style with a hint of sportiness, and finished as it should: high-quality plastics, metal inserts and genuine leather prevail inside.

The multifunctional "steering wheel" with a pronounced relief is flattened at the bottom, the instrument cluster with two "wells" and a color display is elegant and informative, and the symmetrical center console with an 8-inch multimedia center screen and a stylish "remote control" of the climate system is beautiful and very presentable in appearance.

On the front chevrolet locations SS has excellent sports seats with a developed side profile, integrated head restraints and electrically adjustable in eight directions. On the second row of seats, there is enough space for three passengers, but only two will be as comfortable as possible - the high floor tunnel is to blame.

The luggage compartment of the full-size sedan is small - its volume is only 464 liters. The rear sofa does not fold, but has only a hatch in the back, allowing you to transport long items.

Specifications. The engine compartment of the Chevrolet SS hides an atmospheric gasoline "eight" LS3, entirely made of aluminum, with a V-shaped configuration, a distributed fuel supply system and a 32-valve timing. The engine with a displacement of 6.2 liters (6162 cubic centimeters) generates a maximum of 415 horse power power at 5900 rpm and 563 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm.

It mates with a 6-speed "mechanics" or a 6-speed hydromechanical "automatic" with the ability to shift gears by means of paddle shifters, which direct the full amount of traction to the rear axle wheels.

With an automatic transmission, this full-size sedan "shoots" from standstill to 96 km / h in 4.7 seconds, and its maximum capacity is 257 km / h (speed is limited by an electronic collar).

In combined driving conditions, the car consumes 14 liters of fuel for each "hundred" of the way, of which 16.8 liters are spent in urban mode, and 11.2 liters on the highway.

Structurally, the Chevrolet SS differs in a classic scheme: power point located at the front (longitudinal direction), and the drive wheels at the rear. The sports sedan is based on the global GM Zeta platform, where all components and assemblies are assembled on an integral supporting structure made of steel with auxiliary subframes. On the front axle of the car is installed independent suspension with MacPherson struts, and a multi-link configuration is involved in the rear (both there and there are cross stabilizers and coil springs).
Rack steering system "American" is paired with an electric power steering with progressive characteristics. The "hot temper" of the motor is designed to pacify the powerful braking complex with ventilated front and rear "pancakes" Brembo (355 mm and 322 mm, respectively), as well as ABS, EBD and other electronic assistants.

Options and prices. Official sales of the Chevrolet SS are carried out only in the North American market, where the three-box is in small but stable demand. In the USA, for a "charged" car in 2016, they ask for a minimum of $ 46,575, and for this money, a very generous "filling" is offered. In the "state" the sedan has: eight airbags, a multimedia complex with an 8-inch screen and navigation, premium Bose "music" with nine speakers, a system automatic parking, dual-zone "climate", 19-inch wheel rims and sports front seats with heating, ventilation and electrically adjustable. In addition, the basic equipment of the car includes a large number of modern "goodies" responsible for safety and comfort.

Almost all motorists on the planet know, however, what kind of chevrolet car Chevelle SS 1970 - which was much stronger than the muscle car from Chevrolet, in our countries almost no one knows. This is a mid-range car manufactured by General Motors between 1964 and 1977. It was without a doubt the most successful and powerful car Chevrolet. The car was produced in coupe, sedan, convertible and station wagon bodies. The SS (Super Sport) modification was published in 1973. Notice this car could have been in the movie "Fast and the Furious 4", which was in the garage of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and was subsequently blown up in Mexico. Also, the machine was present in many games of the NFS series. In general, you can rarely see this car live. The entire range of Chevrolet.

Exterior

Despite the body of the frame, the huge engine and the dimensions caused by the wheelbase of 2,900mm, the Chevrolet Chevel weighs only 1,482 kg. Release of the 70th year is possible on the universal grille and a little "square" nose of the muscle car. Updated sports wheels and a new 'power dome' hood have found their place. The SS LS-6 model has specialized flaps located on the hood, which can be opened when the driver presses the gas pedal, after which the engine acquires an auxiliary dose of air. A year after graduation, in 1971, Chevel received updated design appearance, which included "Power-Beam" headlights, a new radiator grille and a bumper with integrated parking and reversing lights.

Interior

The standard equipment of the SS included: heated glass located at the rear, a radio and a cassette player, the playback of which was possible thanks to the two rear speakers. The steering column of the Chevrolet Chevel coupe was actually adjusted for the angle of inclination, but the correction for the departure, as on other American-assembled cars, is not pre-installed. Looking into the salon american coupe with a manual transmission, you can see that it was not a pair of chairs that were installed, but a solid sofa, but at the same time the gearshift knob itself had its place on the transmission tunnel. Cars with automatic gearboxes came with a couple of separate seats. On the dashboard, the speed limit is indicated up to 120 miles per hour, but a car with such a powerful engine could easily overcome this mark.

Specifications

The Chevrolet Chevelle SS 1970 coupe came with a 454 V8 petrol engine that displaced the entire 7.5 liters. In terms of strength, a similar unit was capable of squeezing out 360 horsepower, however, the power of the SS LS-6 model, equipped with an engine of the same type and volume, but with an improved compression ratio, produced 450 horses, and a torque of 680 N.M. sometimes even today is not enough for many supercars. Even an engine with a turbine is a rarity, and with an atmospheric one it is fantastic. The restyled model is equipped with a new special suspension.

Prices and configuration

You can buy a 1970 Chevrolet Chevel SS in the United States of America for about $ 30,000... In Russia, it is realistic to purchase such a muscle car from about 2,000,000 rubles. The price will vary from year of manufacture (the more years the more expensive), engine, configuration and general condition of the vehicle.

Summing up

The 1970 Schwrole SS Chevel Coupe was the final car, such as the Muscle Cars, which was very popular around the world. A similar thing happened due to the adoption in 1971 of a number of laws that limited emission standards in the wake of the fuel crisis. Based on this, manufacturers had no choice but to reduce the power of their motors. A number of changes also affected the Chevrolet company when it came out next car with only 245 hp with a motor. After these changes, the enthusiasm for the special model of the car began to gradually subside, which was a consequence of the completion of production of the Chevrolet SS Chevelle in 1977. But this car still remains in demand among those taking part in drag racing. No wonder the protagonist of the movie "Fast and the Furious" drove this particular car, which was the embodiment of unsurpassed speeds and powers. Its strengths include a strong engine, good handling, unique looks and an unrivaled exhaust sound.

Chevrolet Chevelle SS photo

A real man's car, originally from the 70s. Simple, brutal and powerful. No hi-tech problems. A classic V8 that makes all the windows shake within a block. It's all about the legendary 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.

The Chevrolet Shevel SS is an American muscle car produced from 1964 to 1977. Although this car was not as popular as the Dodge Challenger, it still took its place in the history of muscle cars of those years.

During 1970, only 4574 cars were “produced”, which creates some difficulties for those who want to buy an authentic car, and also makes it more uniqueness against the background of more famous rivals.

The exterior of the two-door Chevelle SS coupe turned out to be very uncomplicated, but also attractive at the same time. From the front, two pairs of round headlights “enclosed” in metal frames are looking at you. The humped hood hides a powerful power unit, the rectangular grille is split in two by a large SS emblem and front bumper made of a massive, one might even say a monolithic piece of iron. On the side, the car has received subtle chrome accents on the windows and wheel arches, which house the 14-inch "muscular" alloy wheels... Small side mirrors and door handles look almost invisible. The back of the muscle car is slightly lifted up. In a wide metal frame, rectangular headlights and a place under a license plate found their "shelter". And at the very bottom, there are two bass exhaust pipes.

The interior of the Chevelle SS 1970 delights the eye with its black leather trim and shiny chrome accents such as the power window handles. The driver and front passenger sit on a single one-piece sofa with head restraints. The driver's seat is equipped with a large diameter steering wheel with a thin rim, behind which there are three large analog gauges: a speedometer, a tachometer and a fuel gauge, which constantly approaches zero.

Under the hood is a classic V8 with a volume of 7.4 liters. In those days, a similar engine produced 450 hp. power and 677 Nm of torque. This allowed the Chevelle SS to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6 seconds. The muscle car covered a quarter mile in 13.7 seconds, and the maximum speed reached 210 km / h. The engine was paired with a 3-speed automatic or 4-speed manual transmission.

The cost of a genuine car russian market the average is 10,000,000 rubles.

Chevrolet Chevelle SS (Russian "Chevrolet Shevel SS") - a family of American rear-wheel drive cars, produced from 1964 to 1978. They were produced in 4 bodies: sedan, station wagon, coupe (two-door sedan) and convertible. Experts distinguish 3 generations of models of this car: the first was produced from 1964 to 1967, the second from 1968 to 1972, the third from 1973 to 1978. The most famous are the models produced in 1969-1970, as they are the fastest muscle cars in the history of the American automotive industry.

1969 Chevrolet Shevel SS

The SS model was produced in cabriolet and coupe bodies. They were 5 meters long and 2.9 meters wide. Most of the car is occupied by the engine compartment.

At the front of the body there are 2 pairs of round headlights delimited by a square chrome surround that is part of the radiator grille. Under the latter, in the center, are the direction indicators and side lights. The bonnet has a small protrusion above air filter carburetor.

At the rear of the car there are rectangular lights, a chrome-plated metal bumper and 2 emblems: the first (Chevelle) is located on the edge of the boot lid, the second (SS) is under the lock of the latter.

The "Chevrolet Shevel SS" salon can easily accommodate 5 people. The seats in the car are covered with dark leather and have head restraints. The dashboard is equipped with a speedometer, tachometer. Along the edges of the latter are the scales for the coolant temperature, remaining fuel, battery charge and oil pressure. In the center of the instrument cluster were optionally installed mechanical watches.

Complete set SS 396

Above in the photo - "Chevrolet Shevel SS" in the SS396 configuration.

Its name stands for Super Sport with 396 cubic inches (6.5 liters) engine. Besides the engine, from basic configuration it differed in a different design of the radiator grille, the shape of the hood and a black insert between parking lights... The engine was paired with a 4-speed manual or 2-speed automatic transmission gear. Among additional options there were disc front brakes equipped with a vacuum booster, washers and headlight wipers, electric heating for rear window and power windows.

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

The exterior of the 1970 Chevrolet Shevel SS is smoother and more catchy than the previous model. The radiator grill is made of black plastic with an SS plate in the center. The headlights are now recessed into the metal of the fenders, and the turn signals are located under them.

The hood remained convex, but there were 2 new air intake slots on it: when the accelerator pedal was pressed, they opened and, according to the engineers, they had to draw in the excess air generated on the windshield when driving. At the bottom of the fenders near the doors was an SS plaque, and below it were the numbers indicating the engine displacement in inches. For example, 396 or 454.

The rear of the car has also been updated. It is equipped with combined rear lights enclosed in a chrome frame connecting them. Inside the latter there is an insert made of black plastic. In its center is attached registration numberand another SS plate is attached near the right rear light. On the left and right side of the body there are single exhaust pipes.

The salon is slightly different from the 1969 Chevrolet Shevel SS. The main difference is that the car could be equipped with a three-seater sofa or 2 regular seats for the driver and passenger. It depended on the gearbox used. If it was mechanical, then a solid seat was installed. And if automatic, then 2 separate.

In the basic configuration, the Chevelle was equipped with 3 engines: a six-cylinder and two eight-cylinder volumes of 4.5, 5 and 5.7 liters, respectively. The front brakes were disc brakes, and the rear ones were drum brakes. Suspension - independent (both axles), multi-link.

1970 SS396 Package

This submodification was powered by a 402 cubic inch (6576 cc) engine with 260 kW (360 horsepower). This is the standard V-8 engine for those years, built on the basis of the Chevrolet Big block 427 engine. The piston diameter and stroke length were 104 and 95 millimeters, respectively. The compression ratio was more than 10 units, so A-95 (AI-95) gasoline was used as fuel, which entered the cylinders through a four-chamber carburetor. Double cylinder head, 2 valves per cylinder. Also in the official description of "Chevrolet Shevel SS" there is information about the presence in the cylinder head of the valve mechanism hydraulic lifters.

SS454 complete set

This is the most expensive and "richest" configuration of the Chevrolet Cheville SS. It was powered by a 7.44 liter Chevy 454 (LS-5) engine with a maximum power of 280 kW at 5500 rpm. Piston diameter and stroke length: 108 and 101.6 mm. Torque - 670-680 Nm (500 lb-ft). There were also copies with an LS-6 engine of identical volume, but with an increased compression ratio - 11.25 units. This made it possible to get more high power - 336 kW (450 hp), but without changing the torque value.

Paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, the car accelerates to 100 km / h in 5.5 seconds, and a quarter mile (402 meters) "flies" in 12-13 seconds. Maximum speed is 210 km / h. Besides mechanical boxThe Chevelle SS454 was equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission.

Advantages

The advantages of "Chevrolet Shevel SS" cars include:

  • Appearance.

Smooth body lines, an abundance of chrome-plated parts, stripes crossing the entire body, distinguish the car from other muscle cars with angular shapes and recessed radiator grilles.

  • Powerful engine.

it distinctive feature any muscle car, and for this characteristic the Chevelle SS has bypassed the famous Dodge Charger, Ford mustang and the Pontiac GTO.

  • Roomy salon.

It accommodates 5-6 tall people freely. This is a consequence of the large body width - it is almost 3 meters.

disadvantages

The disadvantages include:

  • Huge fuel consumption and small gas tank.

The volume of the latter, regardless of the engine installed, was 79 liters. And the consumption varied from 15-20 liters when driving on the highway to 30-40 liters when driving in the city.

  • Increased likelihood of skidding.

This is due to the high torque of the engine, and when cornering, an inexperienced driver could unintentionally slide into a ditch.

  • Lack of controllability.

This was a design feature of the steering. It consisted of many movable joints in which the force applied to the steering wheel was lost. This caused the car to change direction more slowly.

Summing up, we can say that the Chevrolet Shevel SS is the fastest muscle car, created in the period of the 1960s and 70s, with an outstanding appearance and a low (relative to supercars with similar characteristics) price.

About car

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a midsize car manufactured by General Motors' Chevrolet Division and produced in three generations between 1964 and 1977. The Chevelle was one of the most successful Chevrolet models. Chevelle badges adorned sedans, coupes, convertibles and even station wagons.

1964–1967

Chevrolet Chevelle 1964

Chevelle was created as a major competitor in both size and concept. Enthusiasts were quick to point out that the Chevelle's 115-inch wheelbase (2900 mm) was similar to that of the Chevy 1955-57. Two-door hardtop coupes and convertibles, a four-door sedan, and a four-door station wagon have been offered throughout production history.

Chevelle SS

The Chevelle SS represented the line and was produced since 1964. In addition to the “Super Sport” nameplate, this package included 14-inch alloy wheels from Impala SS, leather interior, a choice of 2 gearboxes - a 4-speed manual from Muncie or a 2-speed variator from Powerglide.

Z16 SS396

Chevelle Z16 1965

Chevelles Z16 was produced in extremely limited quantities, only 1 batch of 200 copies. It was one of the rarest and most coveted cars Chevrolet ever made. Many enthusiasts have tried to make their '65 Chevelle, but they never succeeded due to the lack of unique parts and trim.

1966–1967

Chevelle 1966

In 1966, the world saw a complete restyling from Chevelle, which received sleek contours, a wide radiator grille, a new bumper and curved side windows.

Chevelle SS 1967

In 1967, changes affected taillights, the rest of the innovations were not found. Front disc brakes were already available on all Chevelle models, as was the new twin brake cylinder together with warning light in the cabin. Subsequently, this new equipment became the standard in safety, including the height-adjustable steering wheel.

1968–1972

Chevelle 1968 Drag

In 1968, the Chevelle received new tapered front fenders with more rounded body lines. Chevrolet produced about 60,500 Super Sport coupes and only 2,286 convertibles in a year. The standard 325 l / s languished under the hood, and in the Turbo-Jet version, the 396 engine had all 375 "mares".
During this period, it became fashionable to style the panel under a tree, and paint the vinyl in the cabin to match the body color, which is what Chevrolet did.

Chevelle SS 1969

In 1969, the Chevelles were billed as "America's most popular midsize car." The changes were minor, although the designers revised the front of the car and the taillights, which increased in size.

Engine choices in 1970 ranged from the standard six-cylinder 155 horsepower (116 kW) and the 200-horsepower 307-cubic-inch V-8, for a pair of 350 V-8s and a pair of 402 (396).

That same year, the Chevelle SS 396 with Turbo-Jet package included 350 horsepower (260 kW), special suspension, hood on the bonnet, black radiator grille and wide sports tires, although 375 hp was also available.

1970 Chevelle SS Convertible with 454 engine

But the most powerful engines there were SS 454 with a volume of 7.4 liters, which had 450 l / s and 680 N * m of torque, covering 1/4 mile in less than 13 s, at a speed at the finish line of 169-174 km / h; ZL1 and L88 with 427, both 430 hp (320 kW), but actually produced over 500 hp (373 kW) on standard configuration.

In 1971, changes again affected the decorative elements of the body - headlights, radiator grill, bumpers and twin taillights.
Like all models, the Chevelle was also affected by the environmental crisis, and the decrease octane number it is logical to imagine, in fact, negatively affected the compression ratio, and power in general.

Chevelle Wagon 1972

In 1972, the Super Sport trim could now be ordered with any V-8 engine, including the base 307. Chevelle SS has overhead engine with a capacity of 270 hp (201 kW) in accordance with a General Motors decree that all engines were rated for net engine power.

Chevelle Yenko Super Cars 1972

Don Yenko developed his own Chevelle`s line, along with his own Camaro`s and Nova`s, which became known as Yenko Super Cars. This tuning studio converted the standard Chevrolet 427 V8 engine into the L72 427, which is 425 hp (317 kW).

1973–1977

Chevelle SS 1973

During this period, Chevelle sales totaled nearly 1.7 million.
For most of 1973, Chevrolet was concerned with safety issues that also affected this model. And this is the frame on the glass, the reinforcement of the roof, the front bumper and the unusually thin frame windscreenwhich also provided better visibility.

The chassis of the new Chevelle.

In the same, 1973, they introduced new design a chassis that provides both better road stability and comfort.

In 1974, Chevelle got a new grille, new bumpers and a new speed division scale - each division corresponded to 5 mph (8 km / h). Innovations have also been made on the new GR70-15 ″ radial tires and coil springs.

Chevelle 1975

For 1975, minor changes were made - bright headlights trim, rectangular taillights are flush with the upper part of the body. Engines ranged from the standard 250 V-6, 350 with a twin-carb V-8, as well as 400 and 454-cubic-inch V8 variants, the latter rated at 235 horsepower.

There was also a Chevelle SE (Special Edition) that was available with front and rear spoilers and F60x15 ″ racing tires. A special suspension was installed on it and marked with “SE” nameplates on the body.

Chevelle 1977

1978 was the sunset for Chevelle.
