Problems with the gearbox manual transmission KIA Sportage

Getting into Russian conditions, even a new, and even more so used, car, as a rule, is deprived of the opportunity to work with the mode provided for it.

 • Rough Russian roads
 • Many hours of traffic jams, in which the box is operated almost continuously,
 • Careless driving with a sharp shift of the lever and driving at the wrong speed,
 • Untimely oil change and irregular diagnostics,

lead to the fact that the device or its individual parts are erased, break down and fail.

After starting the engine, press the foot brake pedal before engaging one of the stages. Otherwise, the vehicle will start to “crawl.” Never press the accelerator and foot brake pedals at the same time.

Selecting the D gear with the control lever, you have switched the transmission to economy mode. Stage D can be driven almost always.

By gently pressing the accelerator pedal, early gear changes with fuel efficient consumption occur. Manual step switching is only necessary in exceptional cases. Select 3, 2 and 1 only when upshifting is to be avoided or additional engine braking is required.

As soon as the traffic situation permits, select D again.

Automatic transmission

Automatic transmission control lever positions P, R and N

R = parking. The front wheels are locked. Translation only when the vehicle is stationary and the hand brake is applied.

R = reverse. Switch on only when the vehicle is stationary.

N = neutral or idle.

The automatic transmission control lever can only be moved out of the P position when the ignition is on and the foot brake pedal is depressed.

The engine can only be started in position P or N. When starting in position N, press the foot brake or apply the handbrake.

Do not press the accelerator pedal during gear shifting.

Stage D

D = Constant position for normal driving conditions in gears 1 to 4.

After starting the engine and engaging D, the gearbox always operates in economy mode.

Stage 3

3 = position for driving conditions in gears 1, 2 and 3.

Stage 2

2 = position for driving in 1st and 2nd gears, eg on a mountain serpentine; while there is no switching to 3rd and 4th gear.

Stage 1

1 = load stage for maximum braking force, eg on steep descents; no shifting above 1st gear.

Electronic driving modes

Sport driving mode, the transmission shifts gears at higher engine speeds:
press the S button (lit).

Economy mode, the transmission shifts gears at lower engine speeds: press button S again.

Help when starting off: press the button.

Engines X 18 XE, X 20XEV.X 25 XE1: the neutral switch automatically shifts the gearbox to the N position to reduce fuel consumption, for example, when stopping at traffic lights. Automatic switching the neutral position is carried out if:

- the automatic transmission control lever is in position D, 3, 2 or 1 and
- the foot brake pedal is pressed and
- the car is stationary and
- there is no pressing on the accelerator pedal.

As soon as the brake is released or the accelerator pedal is depressed, the vehicle starts moving as usual.

After starting a cold engine, the operating temperature control program quickly brings the catalyst temperature up to the temperature required to optimally reduce toxic emissions by delaying gear changes (at higher engine speeds).

Adaptive programs are programs that automatically adapt gear changes to traffic conditionseg when towing a trailer, with a heavy load and on gradients.

Help when starting off

In case of difficulties on slippery roads to drive off, press the button, it turns on in P, R, N, D, 3 (switch-on indicator -). The car will move in 3rd gear.

Start assist is deactivated by pressing the button again.

It is also possible to switch off by:

- manual selection of steps 2 or 1;
- turning off the ignition.

Kickdown - hard pressing all the way to the stop on the accelerator pedal

Pressing the accelerator pedal all the way: below a certain speed, the gearbox downshifts. Applied to accelerate using full power engine.

Additional engine braking

To use the engine's braking functions when descending, turn on 3, 2 or, if the situation requires, 1 in time.

The braking effect is especially effective at stage 1. If it is switched on at too much high speed 1, then the box will continue to work in 2nd gear until the point of transition to 1st gear is reached due to, for example, braking.

Stop

The activated stage can be saved when stopped with the engine running.

When stopping on slopes, be sure to apply the hand brake or press the foot brake. To prevent overheating of the transmission, do not hold the vehicle in place in the engaged gear by increasing the engine speed.

When parked for a long time, such as in a traffic jam or at a railway crossing, stop the engine.

Before leaving the car, first apply the handbrake, then switch to P and remove the ignition key.

The ignition key is removed from the ignition lock only when the transmission control lever is in position P.

"Rocking"

In order to rock a car stuck in sand, mud, snow or in a ditch for further advancement, you can switch the control lever between D and R with a slightly depressed accelerator pedal. Keep the engine speed as low as possible and avoid hard clicks on the accelerator pedal.

The method described above should be used only in exceptional cases.

Precise maneuvering

For precise maneuvering, for example, when parking the car, driving into a garage, etc., you can use the "crawl" method by releasing the foot brake pedal.

Under no circumstances should the accelerator and foot brake pedals be pressed simultaneously.

Malfunction

The indicator lights up when the ignition is on. If it does not go out after starting the engine or lights up while driving, then there is a malfunction of the automatic transmission.

If the vehicle is equipped with a Multi-lnfo display, the fault message "Automatik Getriebe" is shown on the display.

The gearbox no longer automatically shifts.
You can continue driving. Shift gears 1, 3 and 4 manually using the transmission control lever:

1 = 1st gear,
2 = 3rd gear,
3 = 4th gear,
D = 4th gear,
N = neutral (idle),
R = reverse,
R = parking.

Contact an authorized Opel workshop to eliminate the cause. The integrated self-diagnosis algorithm in the system allows you to quickly find the cause of the malfunction.

Power outage

Power supply interruption, for example in case of a discharged battery. In the event of a power failure, it is impossible to remove the automatic transmission control lever from position P.

Unblocking:

1. Apply the hand parking brake.
2. Lift the cover on the protruding part of the floor between the front seats and turn it 90 ° to the right.
3. Press the pawl forward with a screwdriver and move the automatic transmission control lever out of position P.
4. Replace the cover on the protruding part of the floor between the front seats and fix it.

Re-moving to position P will again lock the lever. Have the cause of the power failure rectified by an authorized Opel workshop.

In this article, I will briefly outline what most often breaks on kia car Sportage 3, model 2010-2016, factory designation Sl or Sle. I work at a service station and have practical experience in this matter. Here we will describe not only typical "diseases" of the sportage, but also methods of their treatment. The article is intended to save the owner of such a car from many hours of searching for information on sections of automobile forums. It will also be useful for those who are just going to buy a used sportswear, because it is important to understand what to check when buying. If I suddenly missed something, write in the comments.

Four-wheel drive does not work!

A very common malfunction in the 3rd generation Sportage is a breakdown of the all-wheel drive system. It occurs even when the car is operated exclusively as an urban SUV, without using the all-wheel drive blocking function. After all, even if you do not press the 4WD lock button, the control unit automatically connects rear axle at moments of sharp acceleration when starting off, or when the front wheels slip. The torque is constantly redistributed by the ITM unit between the front and rear wheels in a proportion from 100% - 0% to 50% - 50%, respectively.

There are two faults with all-wheel drive on the Sportage:

 • breakage of the all-wheel drive coupling (PP);
 • corrosion of the splined connection between the gearbox (gearbox) and the transfer case;

Moreover, the second malfunction occurs much more often than the first.

Malfunction of the PP clutch

All-wheel drive clutch, Sportage; 1 - clutch pack, 2 - pump

It manifests itself as follows: there is no connection of the rear wheels, even in 4WD lock mode (i.e. when the button is pressed), while the 4WD system malfunction lamp on the instrument panel is on. Important, that cardan shaft while rotating!

In general terms, the coupling is conventional system with a multi-plate clutch package, which are compressed under oil pressure. The pressure is generated by a pump attached to the coupling housing.

Error codes "P1832 Clutch Thermal Overstress Shutdown" or "P1831 Clutch Thermal Overstress Warning" appear. Here is a detailed description of what exactly breaks down in this case and how you can repair it.

This happens especially often when the clutch overheats, with prolonged slip. Or with frequent use of 4WD lock mode. But this mode is intended only for short-term use in an area with difficult road conditions... Do not drive for a long time with the 4WD lock button pressed.

The problem is solved by replacing the PP clutch assembly. The part is not cheap, but there are firms that provide coupling repair services. These services are easy to find on the internet.

One more possible breakdown - this is a malfunction of the clutch pump itself. In this case, error code P1822 or P1820 occurs. On this issue, KIA even issued a service bulletin, according to which of. the dealer must replace the clutch assembly.

If the car is not under warranty, you need to replace the pump separately, which will be much cheaper. Only the new pump has already been modified and requires the purchase of a wiring.

Part Numbers: 4WD Clutch Pump - 478103B520,pump wiring 478913B310

The price for a pump with wiring is approximately 22,000 rubles.

If you are buying a used Sportage, be sure to check the car for these problems. The repair is quite expensive, it consists of the prices for the differential parts (approx. 20,000 rubles) and the cost of the transfer case (600 USD the price for a second-hand) and of course the work on removing the gearbox and replacing parts (up to 20,000 rubles)

List of necessary spare parts for repairing all-wheel drive on Sportage 3, with OE numbers

Do not turn on / hard to turn on the gear on a manual transmission, or extraneous noise

This disease begins to manifest itself with a characteristic noise from the gearbox, which is heard on a cold one, when the engine is running on idling... The service bulletin for this problem prescribes the replacement of the synchronizer rings for the 4th, 5th and 6th gears of the manual transmission.

Sometimes the reason may be in the "synchronization" of the 3rd gear and the corresponding gear. The reason is specifically determined after disassembling the box.

If the synchronizers are not replaced in time, more serious consequences may occur - the fur. damage to the teeth of gear wheels, which entails their replacement, and, consequently, more expensive repairs.

The price of work usually costs up to $ 300. Plus the necessary spare parts.

The car does not drive, a strong grinding in the area of the right wheel, a malfunction of the intermediate shaft

The problem is similar to the one described above with four-wheel drive. Rotting out the spline connection between the right-hand drive shaft and the inner CV joint. This happens due to the ingress of water through the oil seal (or rather the boot). Further, the corrosion does its job, the slots weaken and completely cut off. When the slots are cut off completely, the car will be able to reach the service only when the all-wheel drive, because as a result of the operation of the differential, all the torque of the front axle will go to the right side.

Corrosion of the splines of the flush shaft and drive, right, Sportage 3

Repair price: ramval 4 500 rubles., CV joint right up to 45 000 rubles.

As in the case with the connection of the transfer case - the box, it is necessary to prevent the flushing with the replacement of the oil seal and the application of lubricant, this will prolong the life of the splines.

The engine does not develop more than 3000 rpm, the "CHECK" lamp is on or flashing

Of course, such symptoms are typical for many breakdowns. diesel cars... But here we are talking about the most frequent malfunctions, those that sooner or later happen on all Sportage.

This "disease" is typical for diesel configurations with R 2.0 and U2 1.7 engines. There are usually two reasons for these symptoms:

 • malfunction of the boost pressure sensor, on a car with a 2-liter engine;
 • malfunction of the boost pressure sensor wiring, on cars with a 1.7 engine;

In both cases, the control unit transfers the operation of the motor to emergency mode, which means, in particular, a cut-off of engine speed at around 3000 rpm. The driver has the feeling that the turbine is simply not working. This is certainly not the case.

The most important condition for the durability of any automatic transmission is the timely maintenance... This is especially true for modern, more advanced boxes.

KIA Sportage 3 - pure Korean

Oil change in automatic transmission kIA car Sportage 3 is not the most difficult procedure. With a careful approach, it is possible to change the working fluid on this car even in the absence of specific knowledge on the structure and principle of operation of the automatic transmission lubrication system. It is enough just to strictly follow the instructions and be careful when performing work.

In the article, we will consider two options for replacing the lubricating fluid in the KIA Sportage 3 machine: full and partial.

What oil and when to change

The scheduled time for changing the oil in the automatic box of the KIA Sportage 3 is 90 thousand kilometers. Some sources claim that the lubricant in the automatic transmission of this car can not be changed at all if the operating conditions are normal. However, this is dubious information.

Even under normal conditions, when abnormal loads are excluded, the ATF liquid after a run of 90 thousand km turns black. Its volume accumulates a large number of wear products that the magnet is not able to accumulate on itself in the required volume, and these abrasive particles circulate freely through the system. The additives also decompose and the base degrades.

Therefore, it is better to make a replacement no later than indicated in the regulations. If the car is operated in difficult conditions, then the mileage between successive replacements is reduced to 60 thousand km.

The following operational factors can be classified as heavy:

 • mountainous or rugged terrain;
 • bad roads with many bumps;
 • sandy or snowy terrain where the wheels have to slip periodically;
 • frequent short-distance travel;
 • the ambient temperature is above 32 ° C for more than half of the entire operating time of the car;
 • systematic use of the car as a traction unit for transporting trailers;
 • the use of a car as a police, rescue, medical or other service crew.

It is necessary to control the lubricant level at least once every 30 thousand km. early recommended in the following cases:

 • the machine begins to malfunction (speeds are switched with a delay, tangible jolts appear), and no traces of mechanical failures were found;
 • there was a leak or a forced drain for maintenance or repair with a mileage close to the scheduled one;
 • the car stood motionless for a long time (more than 3 years).

When choosing a lubricant, the manufacturer's recommendations should be followed. Automatic transmission KIA Sportage 3 is filled transmission fluid class SP-IV. Recommended to cast original oil from the KIA company.

However, many drivers use analogues of the same class from other manufacturers. At the same time, no negative consequences are observed. As practice has shown, it is quite enough to update aTF fluid in the box no later than the scheduled time for its long-term and trouble-free operation.

Replacement tools

To change the oil in the KIA Sportage 3 automatic transmission, you will need a relatively small list of tools. It all depends on whether a complete or partial replacement will be performed.

Let's first consider the minimum set for a partial renewal of the lubricant:

 • socket or open-end wrench for 24 (for the drain bolt);
 • wrench 22 or square with a facet 8 (for the breather bolt);
 • key 8 (for bolts of metal underbody protection);
 • empty container with a capacity of at least 5 liters for mining;
 • funnel for filling;
 • a copper ring for a drain plug;
 • clean rags;
 • 5 liters of oil.

If a complete replacement is planned, then the following will additionally be required:

 1. pliers and screwdriver (for dismantling air filter and air ducts, as well as removing clamps from the automatic transmission oil supply and return hoses to the cooling radiator);
 2. plastic bottle with a volume of 1.5–2 liters;
 3. an additional 3 liters of oil;
 4. an assistant who will start and stop the engine to drain the mining.
 5. It is also possible to additionally replace the rubber ring under the inspection plug.

Types of oil changes

As is the case with most modern automatic transmissions, changing the oil in the KIA Sportage 3 automatic transmission provides two options:

 1. partial replacement;
 2. complete replacement.

In the case of a partial renewal of the automatic transmission lubricant, the old oil is not completely removed from the system. The volume of the drained treatment is about 5 liters. This is just over half.

If a complete replacement is made, then it provides for the renewal of the entire volume of lubricant with the complete removal of the used oil and filling in a new one. In any case, at the end of the work, the oil level is checked through inspection hole.

Before starting work, the car is placed on an inspection pit or raised on a lift. The bottom protection is dismantled (plastic with clips and metal with screws). Automatic transmission warms up to working temperature (55–65 ° C). After that, the tool and the empty container are prepared.

Partial replacement

When partial replacement oil in an automatic transmission with your own hands, the following actions are performed:

In this case, it is not necessary to drain the oil through drainer, even with heavy overflow. It is enough to wait until the liquid comes out through the control hole until a thin stream or drops are formed.

note

A partial change will allow you to renew the oil by about 60–65%. If there were no complaints about the operation of the automatic transmission, the oil is relatively clean and does not smell of burning, this option is quite suitable.

Complete oil change

In case of a complete replacement, it is necessary to perform all the actions as for a partial one up to the point with start-up and warm-up. After filling about 5 liters of liquid, the following is done:

Used and new oil, automatic transmission Sportage 3

After that, the return hose is put on in its place and the air filter housing is installed. This completes the oil change in the automatic box KIA finished.
