We are accustomed to believing in the impeccability of the "Germans", in the reliability of the "Japanese" and in other axioms (or are they still legends?), Which automakers themselves have stubbornly repeated for decades. Of course, there are independent studies proving that this or that respected brand won recognition all over the world for a reason. It is all the more interesting that some other reliability ratings completely refute popular misconceptions.
Myth 1. Cars used to be better
We live in the era of disposable items. Sturdy-looking "hiking" boots can come apart at the seams in a couple of months, even if you only walked around the city in them. The paint peeled off from the body of the "fifth" iPhone in the first days of operation. And I personally know a Ford Mondeo buyer, who in the first year of owning a car faced so many small and not so much trouble that he handed the car back to the dealership. Has this ever happened before?
It is believed that the models of previous years were created with a much greater margin of safety. It is impossible to say whether it is true or not. But manufacturers take into account the fact that we have begun to change cars more often and rarely think about what kind of repair a car will need after 200 thousand kilometers.
It is believed that companies en masse have switched to lower quality components, starting to purchase them from manufacturers from third world countries. The automotive component industry has indeed changed: for example, the Chinese company Fuyao Glass Industry has now come second in the supply of automotive glass to factories of various brands (by the way, this year it opened production in Russia and began to supply glass to the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga) ... Such examples are of concern to old school motorists.
However, statistics can dispel doubts. Studies carried out on the European market show that among the current 4-5 year old cars there is the same proportion of copies with various kinds of malfunctions (about 11%) as among cars produced 15 years ago and examined at the beginning of the 2000s. Such data are presented in the reports of the German organization TUV, which is engaged in vehicle inspection. Of course, in this case we are talking about neat Europeans who maintain their cars in good technical condition.
And what is overseas? The statistics are even better there. Research by the American J.D. Power, fixing all (even the smallest) problems that arise during the operation of machines, show that over the past 10 years the number of comments has already halved! In 2003, there were an average of 273 problem parameters per 100 three-year-olds, and in 2013 this number dropped to just 126 (data from the 2013 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study).
However, if we talk not about the "average" car, but about models of specific brands, then you can see that depending on the year of manufacture, reliability can vary within very wide limits. For example, according to the TUV rating, the reliability of Renault cars has dropped significantly over the past decade. In the 2004 report, the Laguna and Megane models, four to five years old, are in quite decent places - on par with the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. Of the used cars surveyed, only 10.5% of Laguna and 11.3% of Megane were seriously damaged. Over the years, the situation has changed radically.
In a 2013 report, Laguna and Megana, aged four to five, are already at the bottom of the list, at 18% and 23%. Even lower - Renault Kangoo (23.2%), and the most unreliable car was recognized as the related Dacia Logan (25.8%).
A similar drop in quality is observed with Citroen. If the Xsara golf-class model in 2004 surpassed the Audi and BMW business sedans in reliability, showing the result in only 9.8% of faulty cars at the age of 4-5 years, then the Citroen C4 that replaced it breaks down almost twice as often (16, 7%).
However, such examples, fortunately, are an exception. In the special quality of the previous models, first of all, the hardened "automobile gurus" who have found the times when "Mercedes was still the same", and the new Lada are no longer like "the very first" Zhiguli ", believe in the special quality of the previous models. To believe them or not is a philosophical question. Neither one nor the other can provide any reliable statistics of breakdowns.
Myth 2. Engineering excellence of prestigious brands
At world car premieres, journalists are always impressed with how luxury brands effectively present their technical know-how. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, Range Rover, Cadillac - all of them will certainly show the new components in the section and allow you to ask engineers in detail about all the benefits of fresh solutions. This is done so that buyers have no doubts that they are paying not only for the brand and expensive finishing materials, but also for real technical excellence. True, not a single brand, of course, admits that a car stuffed with advanced electronics is more capricious than simpler models, and components and assemblies that have received new constructive decisions, sometimes less reliable and more expensive to repair than cheaper designs.
A year ago, the British organization Warranty Direct, which collects statistics on warranty and post-warranty repairs of cars in the UK, published a rating of the worst cars in the last 15 years. The list is shocking: it consists almost entirely of the flagship models of the German car industry. It was a real surprise that even such models were included in it, which, on the contrary, were called the most reliable in other ratings. The worst ten cars, in terms of Warranty Direct, looks like this:
- Audi RS 6 (2002-2011 years of release)
- BMW M5 (2004-2011)
- Mercedes-Benz SL (2002-2012)
- Mercedes-Benz Viano (1996-2004)
- Mercedes-Benz CL (2000-2007)
- Audi A6 allroad (2000-2005)
- Bentley Continental GT (2003-2012)
- Porsche 911 (body 996) (2001-2006)
- Range Rover (2002-2012)
- Citroen XM (1994-2000)
This amazing selection of machines can be easily explained: the experts took into account not only the total number of breakdowns, but - more importantly - also the cost of repairs. This explains why the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-Benz SL were blacklisted. Of course, the comparison of the cost of repairs is only partially fair, but it should be noted that the rating taking into account the “monetary factor” gives more correct results than without it.
Although without taking into account the "price of the issue", the reliability of many respected brands raises serious doubts. For example, statistics on engine breakdowns do not favor Audi, BMW, Mini and Volkswagen, Warranty Direct experts say. For every 27 audi cars there is one motor breakdown. Worse is only the MG Rover brand, which has one breakdown for every 13 cars. Well, the best results were shown by the brands Honda and Toyota, which have one engine breakdown in 344 and 171 cars, respectively.
Not only in Warranty Direct research, but also in American rankings, these brands do not show the best results. J.D. Power brands such as Audi, Mini and Volkswagen also rank in the top ten for reliability when judging vehicles at age three. And BMW also performed lower than the industry average.
To be sure, you can refer to another independent rating - Consumer Reports, which contains statistics of calls to American car services from 2003 to 2012. The top twenty cars, which are said to have received “significantly more than average” hits, included such expensive models as the BMW 7 Series, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GL, Mini Cooper S and Volkswagen Touareg.
Myth 3. Trouble-free "Japanese"
They say that the Russian ambassador to Japan at one time drove alternately in a Mercedes and a Lexus. There were always many problems with one machine, and the other served impeccably. Guess which one? This story was told to me by a friend of mine who had worked at the embassy for several years, and I later retold it to many acquaintances. Everyone usually guesses correctly, because Japanese reliability is an axiom. Or not already?
IN last years toyota brand sadly became famous at once for several large reviews of cars due to various kinds of factory defects, but this brand still occupies high lines in the reliability ratings. The ability to quickly eliminate deficiencies found may contribute here.
Indeed, Toyota and Lexus models occupy quite high lines in many ratings, but this cannot be said about other brands. And Toyota is not praised by all researchers. For example, the German automobile club ADAC, which has been researching the reliability of cars for many years, did not notice any special advantages for Toyota. The list of 21 cars, the owners of which use the service least often, includes only one "Japanese" - Nissan Micra. Well, Honda Jazz got into 12 outsiders. Of course, here we can talk about the error of German research: there are not so many Japanese models in the German car fleet. But in America, there are definitely enough of them.
According to J.D. Power, among "three-year-olds" Lexus is in the lead, but Mitsubishi is one of the three outsiders. Only Dodge and Land rover... Subaru, Nissan and Infiniti also perform worse than average.
Research by Consumer Reports (statistics of calls to car services from 2003 to 2012) also confirms that the Japanese are the Japanese. Several Toyota / Lexus, Honda / Acura, Mazda and Infiniti models are awarded the title of the best. The rest of the Japanese brands, according to researchers, do not represent anything remarkable in terms of reliability.
Myth 4. "The British" are the most problematic
Testing new models of Jaguar and Land Rover, we note from time to time that British engineering has made great strides in recent years. Take, for example, all-aluminum bodies: this solution is now used not only on sports cars, but also - for the first time in history - on purebred SUVs. Both on highways and on serious off-roading, these cars will not give way to anyone, but all words of admiration usually have to be accompanied by remarks that have already set the teeth on edge about reliability ratings.
No joke: in J.D. Power land brand Rover has been repeatedly ranked as the worst of them all, and Jaguar moved up just five lines in the latest rankings. If for 100 used Lexus at the age of three years there are 71 noted problems, then Land Rovers have 220.
However, representatives of the British brand say that the quality of the machines has improved significantly in recent years. Indian concern Tata, which acquired Jaguar Land Rover in 2008, has made significant financial investments in reliability and innovation.
To find any confirmation that the unreliability of British brands is already an outdated myth, you need to seriously try. Well, for example, in the latest ranking of the worst ADAC cars, there are no English models. Also, in the twenty most unreliable models according to Consumer Reports, there are currently not a single Jaguar and Land Rover car, despite the fact that there is a BMW 7-series and X5 (statistics of calls to car services from 2003 to 2012.) That is, according to this study suggests that the Jaguar XJ and Range Rover sport surpass them in quality. However, the fact that the "British" were not among the worst here is still a weak consolation.
But a fresh study by Warranty Direct is already inspiring hope: the Jaguar brand entered the Top 5 in engine reliability, behind only Honda, Toyota, Mercedes and Volvo. True, experts immediately make a reservation: the most expensive warranty case over the past 15 years has been a Range Rover engine breakdown. Repair cost 13,000 pounds, which is equivalent to 680,000 rubles.
Myth 5. Mass brands save on reliability
As much as buyers of luxury models want to feel the superiority of their cars over cheaper ones, in terms of reliability, many cheap models have long made their way to the leaders. If one can argue about all of the above myths, finding certain contradictions in the ratings, then all the researchers almost unanimously note that in terms of reliability, some small cars are not only not inferior to expensive models, but also surpass them.
The ADAC ranking includes models such as Volkswagen Fox, Renault Twingo, Peugeot 206, Nissan Micra, Ford Ka and Citroen C1 among the extremely reliable cars. They are placed on a par with the Audi A5, A6 and Q5; BMW 1st, 3rd, 5th series, X1 and X3; Mercedes A-Class, B-Class, C-Class and GLK.
According to TUV statistics, the top ten used cars at the age of 4-5 now looks like this:
- Toyota Prius
- Mazda 2
- Toyota Auris
- Toyota Corolla Verso and Smart Fortwo
- Mercedes C-class
- Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Boxster
- Porsche 911
- Volkswagen Golf Plus
According to Warranty Direct, the absolute leaders in reliability (including the cost of repair) are the following models:
1. Mitsubishi lancer (2005-2008 years of release)
2. Opel (Vauxhall) Agila (2000-2008)
3. Suzuki Alto (1997-2006)
4. Toyota Aygo (2005-2012)
5-6. Honda HR-V (1998-2006) and Volvo S40 (1996-04)
7. Mazda MX-5 (2005-2012)
8-9. Mercedes E-class (2006-2012) and Toyota Yaris (1999-2003)
10. Honda Jazz (2001-2008)
One solid myth
Finally, it should be said about those models, the reliability of which is not measured at all by any statistics. And buyers' perceptions of how faithfully such a model will serve is based solely on myths, rumors and isolated cases that happened with friends and acquaintances. At best, you can add results to this. lengthy tests and resource tests, which are satisfied with journalists, but their results still should not be attributed to all released copies of a particular model. We are talking, of course, about products of Russian brands, about foreign cars of local assembly and about Chinese models.
Curious reliability tests are carried out by our colleagues from Autoreview. At the test site, they simulate the operation of the machine in various modes, and the loads are increased. This makes it possible to assess the endurance of machines at an accelerated pace and to identify many "congenital diseases" of certain structures. Many models do not stand up: serious breakdowns occur long before the end of the tests. For example, on a Chevrolet Aveo assembled in Kaliningrad, the gearbox withstood only 18,000 km, the shock absorbers started flowing much earlier, and the front stabilizer nuts were unscrewed already at the first thousand kilometers.
Let it be difficult to judge the reliability of all machines from one copy, but when in comparative test direct competitors are involved, the results become more revealing. Take, for example, the parallel durability tests of Renault Duster and Chevrolet Niva. Some buyers of domestic models are convinced that available foreign cars are not much superior to Russian cars, but the difference in reliability turned out to be huge.
Tests simulating 100,000 km on road different typesincluding the serious off-roading and cobblestones revealed the Duster's suspension to be commendable. For the first time in the history of Autoreview life tests, after a long test, the suspension did not require replacement of a single element. But the diagnostics of the motor based on the results of a long-term test showed that it wears out much faster than it should be. The model also had many other disadvantages, but they are all essentially nothing compared to the problems that Niva had. Experts noted that everything that can rust, including the cylinder block, rusted under the hood. During the test on the cobblestone road "Shniva" had to change 10 (!) Shock absorbers. In the gearbox, the teeth of the fifth gear collapsed and it was jammed.
Of course, tests of single copies do not give the picture that develops from statistics that take into account the breakdowns of hundreds of thousands of cars. But after all, manufacturers themselves record all calls to official services, and it is possible that sooner or later independent organizations will also have access to statistics from Russian service stations. And then, perhaps, common myths about Russian models and foreign cars of local assembly will be debunked. So far, unfortunately, we know very little about their true reliability.

European drivers and owners road transport admitted that the most reliable car Is a Skoda car.
Most car buyers, both new and used, choose reliability as the main selection criterion. This concept includes a lot of things: the least number of breakdowns, maintainability of components and assemblies, engine operation at low-quality gasoline or oil, etc. in this article we will tell you which is the most reliable car for Russia in 2015.
World car reliability rating system
Reliability ratings of automobile models and brands are carried out all over the world and on each continent separately. Countries with large automotive markets also conduct their own reliability ratings. These ratings are usually initiated by analytical agencies and the automotive media.
Why are car reliability ratings carried out? The media and analytical agencies make such ratings for their own earnings. Such information will always be in demand. This means that the agency that has published such a rating will be able to earn a lot from advertising that will be present on the pages of this rating.
- the market where cars are sold;
- car class (hatchback, crossover, sedan, SUV)
- period of years of production of cars participating in the rating;
- a list of potential problems that may arise with each specific car model.
The reliability of each specific car model is ascertained by interviewing a specific sample of respondents, who are the owners or drivers who directly operate these cars. Such surveys are carried out in places where the greatest concentration of motorists is: service stations, car exhibitions, car dealerships, etc.
The list of potential problems with the car includes various possible breakdowns, malfunctions and shortcomings that were discovered by drivers during the operation of cars. The list is usually divided into several categories:
The table below lists the main categories of potential problems and their descriptions.
Breakdown categories | Description |
Engine and transmission | This may include problems with fuel system, with a camshaft, sensitivity to poor quality gasoline, high requirements for lubricants, short intervals of technical inspection, reliable fastenings of the engine cooling system and gearbox, etc. |
Car body | The manufacturer's warranty for the absence of corrosion on the body, the thickness of the paintwork, the thickness of the body panels, the maintainability of the body panels, the quality of the paintwork, the appearance of air bubbles and moisture, a lot of chips. The car body also includes: the quality of plastic and rubber inserts, moldings, the quality of the plastic of the front and rear lights |
Chassis | Service life of consumable parts: shock absorbers, struts, silent blocks, bushings, rubber bands and seals of stabilizers and levers. The quality of the consumables and spare parts offered. |
Cabin comfort | Convenient location of the driver, reliability of the driver's auxiliary systems: parking system, anti-lock braking system, traction control system, stability control system, navigation system, climate control, cruise control, etc. |
Vehicle safety | EuroNCAP rating, airbag deployment. |
After the data has been collected from the respondents, the agencies calculate the results. Usually, the number of problems per 100 cars of a given model or brand is considered. Most often, values are rounded up to the vehicle brand. so if a brand has absolutely failed models on the market, they can drastically reduce its reliability rating.
The most common problems with modern cars
Many motorists will be interested to know what kind of breakdowns and malfunctions are common to all modern cars.
It turns out that most often drivers and owners of motor vehicles produced over the past decade call such problems in cars:
— appearance car is of poor quality paintwork;
- car control system - errors of the control unit and various automatic systems in the car;
- poor quality upholstery of the car;
- problems with audio systems;
- problems with the navigation system.
Rating of car reliability in Russia 2015
Now we should tell you which car brands are recognized as the most reliable in Russia and Europe this year.
European drivers and vehicle owners have recognized that the most reliable car is a Skoda car. The Czech car manufacturer makes such cars, in every 100 of which motorists find 77 problems or problems. This is the least number of problems of all. car brands.
In second place is the South Korean kIA brand, which scored 83 complaints for every 100 vehicles.
In second place is the South Korean brand KIA, which received 83 complaints for every 100 vehicles. No wonder in Russia kia model Rio is one of the three best-selling models, only Lada Granta and Hyundai Solaris are ahead of it. Moreover, the second model belongs to the South Korean one in common with KIA automobile concern... In addition, the KIA brand has launched many stylish models in the class of crossovers, business sedans, compact hatchbacks.
In third place in the rating of reliability in Russia is the brand Suzuki, which does not shine with large sales in russian market... However, it was her car models that entered the Top 3 reliability of cars in Europe and Russia. Suzuki has 86 problems for every 100 vehicles.
But the fifth line of the car reliability rating was shared by models of the Mercedes-Benz and Toyota brands. They have 88 problems for every 100 cars.
- Volvo - 93 problems for every 100 cars;
- Volkswagen - 95 problems for every 100 cars;
- Opel - 98 problems for every 100 cars;
- Peugeot - 99 problems for every 100 cars;
- SEAT - 99 problems for every 100 vehicles.
The concept of car quality is quite relative. Much depends on the value of the vehicle. Some manufacturers even manage to make a car that costs no more than 1 million rubles to be reliable, strong and durable. Others, demanding more than 3-4 million rubles for a car, force the owners to constantly face many problems and malfunctions.
The best quality cars will be divided into 2 parts. First, you can familiarize yourself with the results of research carried out by German specialists from vdTUV, after which the results of current surveys of car owners conducted by Consumer Reports will be presented.
Quality rating from vdTUV
The vsTUV organization annually publishes a fresh rating, which contains the highest quality and reliable cars... This is the German Association for Technical Supervision.
A special feature of the agency is that they work in Germany, analyze the local market and rely on the performance of used cars. It is very difficult to objectively assess the quality of new cars. There is a minimum amount of initial data, plus the cars have not yet had time to travel a long enough distance to talk about some factory weak points and congenital problems.
Experts of the TUV association are extremely thorough in their work, trying to objectively select the highest quality and not particularly. They rely on information about the technical condition, identified malfunctions after a certain time from the start of operation. In fact, their study makes it clear what problems a particular car may have, and how likely it is to face expensive repairs as the vehicle ages. The results of the maintenance of about 9 million cars are taken as a basis, checked for more than 100 parameters. But 18 of them are considered key. Namely, problems with the engine, gearbox, exhaust system, steering, suspension, brakes, lighting, etc. As a result, the percentage of breakdowns was displayed for each car in the corresponding age category.
The published rating among the highest quality passenger cars of 2019 includes several categories of cars. They were divided based on age. Some will consider these studies not particularly objective, since only the German market is taken into account here. But in reality, most of the cars sold in Germany are also represented in Russia. The same assembly, the same configurations. Yes, the quality of roads in Russia is much worse, and the climate is more severe. Therefore, the percentage of breakdowns and malfunctions during operation will be slightly higher. Although this still does not change the alignment of forces and allows you to determine the highest quality and most reliable cars sold in the world and in the territory of the Russian Federation in particular.
2-3 years old
Considering the highest quality and trouble-free car brands, German and Japanese brands must be among the favorites. But since these are analysts from Germany, where locally made cars dominate, they were among the leaders.
In the age group from 2 to 3 years old, the favorites are as follows:
- Porsche 911 at 2.5%. It was in so many cases that the owners had to go to the car service to solve various problems.
- Mercedes B-Class. Its failure rate is only 2.6%.
- Mercedes GLK. Here the percentage of problems is about 2.7%.
But the most substandard and problematic cars in this age group were Dacia Logan, Fiat Punto, Ford Ka and Kia Sportage. Their failure rate ranged from 11.7 to 14.6%.
4 to 5 years old
If we talk about the best and highest quality used cars with a mileage of 4-5 years, then the situation has not changed very much:
- The first position with 3.6% is confidently held by the Porsche 911.
- The second place was taken by the same Mercedes B-Class with 4.9%.
- The three leaders were closed by Audi Q5 with 5.0%.
The worst in this age category were Dacia Logan, Peugeot 206 and Chevrolet spark... At the age of 4-5 years, approximately 22-28% of machines will have serious enough malfunctions that require professional intervention and substantial expenses.
6-7 years old
The leaders are:
- Porsche 911 with 6%.
- Mercedes SLK with 7%.
- Audi TT with 7.7%.
Dacia Logan, Peugeot 206 and Renault Kangoo cars should be refused due to too high percentage of faults. Here, the percentage of breakdowns ranges from 28.7 to 30.9%.
8-9 years old
The most preferred cars that have been in operation for more than 8 years, according to authoritative German analysts, are:
- BMW X1.
Dacia Logan, Chevrolet Matiz and Renualt Kangoo are definitely not worth buying.
10-11 years old
For Germans, 10-11 years is an extremely respectable age, when most owners already prefer to change the car for a newer one. But still, there are a lot of older vehicles on German roads.
In terms of quality, reliability and reliability, TUV singles out these favorites:
- Mazda 2.
The weakest cars were recognized as Chevrolet Matiz, Renault Megane and Dacia Logan.
This does not give a definitive answer to the question of which car, based on its quality and problem-free, is better to choose.
For more objective conclusions, it is worth considering. It was compiled by American experts. Only here the list is formed according to a slightly different principle. The highest quality and most reliable cars were determined by the owners themselves.
Consumer Reports rating
Every year, US Consumer Reports polls dozens of car owners to determine the best reliable and highest quality passenger cars. About 500 thousand people took part in the current survey. All of them have recently become owners of new cars. Based on their feedback and opinions, a general list was compiled. Moreover, the best and worst models by parameters such as reliability and quality from different brands.
For a more visual analysis, experts have compiled a special reliability index. It determines the level of build quality of cars, their reliability, reliability, the number of breakdowns, etc. The higher the index, the less often the owners of these cars will have to contact a service center or try to repair a car on their own.
Not everyone manages to produce really high-quality and problem-free vehicles. This rating for Russia will seem more objective and relevant, since there is no total domination of German brands, as in the case of TUV, here. Moreover, the American edition was very critical of the analysis of local brands. That is, Ford should not be among the leaders, like a number of other brands.
Starting from a conventional underdog in the top 10 auto brands, you'll be able to recognize the current leader based on research from Consumer Reports.
Hyundai
Mid-size crossover Santa Fe has been repeatedly recognized as the most reliable. It is one of the 5 South Korean vehicles with the highest confidence level. Also, everything is fine here with active and passive safety.
But the Americans are not happy with the Ioniq hybrid model. Frequent battery problems and on-board computer reduce demand and make cars an outsider.
Mini
A very popular brand in Russia and all over the world. Like Hyundai, the reliability index is 57. The Countryman was recognized as the best model, but the classic Mini Cooper became the worst, to the surprise of many.
The BMW division is ranked 9th in terms of quality and reliability. Their mini crossover was voted the most preferred vehicle in the entire lineup. The owners rarely had to contact the service. But Cooper frankly let us down. Over the past year, about 25% of owners were forced to contact car services with breakdowns of varying degrees of complexity.
Bmw
The German carmaker is ranked 1 line higher than its subsidiary, taking the 8th place. The best Bavarian car was the i3 city electric car. The X2 crossover was the worst.
The high marks for the i3 are largely due to the fact that the model has been on the market for several years. During this time, the company managed to fix the existing factory defects.
The X2 crossover station wagon is a relatively fresh model, and therefore it still has to solve its problems in the framework of subsequent updates.
Audi
7th place in the quality rating of another German manufacturer. The best consumers from the United States recognized the mid-size crossover Q5. The A3 has the lowest quality level. Audi's overall reliability index was 60.
Moreover, Audi turned out to be the best German company in the United States, although a year earlier Audi was at the 4th position in the same rating.
The most successful project was the Q5 crossover, while the family hatchback earned the lowest marks due to frequent breakdowns and forced calls to a car service.
Infiniti
The Americans gave the sixth place to the premium unit nissan represented by the Infiniti brand. Their reliability index only slightly exceeded Audi and amounted to a final 61.
It is also interesting that the best and worst quality model turned out to be the neighbors in the line. Q60 became the favorite, but Q50 was recognized as an outsider.
Kia
Top 5 among the best manufacturers according to the Americans, opens the South Korean brand Kia. Like Infiniti, the reliability index was 61. But the total number of malfunctions and service calls was lower, as well as maintenance costs.
Kia Sedona is positioned as the best South Korean car, and the worst was the Cadenza. Business sedan Cadenza did not live up to the hopes and expectations. The car often breaks down, the first malfunctions appear after just 6 months of operation.
But the Sedona minivan was recognized as the best. Given the love of Americans for this category of cars, it was especially honorable for Kia to earn such a title.
Subaru
Their cars are really high quality, trouble-free and durable. Even the engines are not confused here. In the United States, servicing Subarov engines is much better and easier than in Russia. Hence the increased demand.
Crosstrec turned out to be the leader of the manufacturer, and WRX was recognized as the loser. Too many problems arise with a sports car after the first months of operation.
Mazda
The top three is opened by another Japanese brand represented by mazda with a reliability index of 69.
The favorite and outsider in the manufacturer's lineup is somewhat surprising. But these are dry statistics that are hard not to believe. As a result, consumers recognized the best creation from Mazda model MX-5 Miata. it sports coupe possesses excellent characteristics and exemplary quality.
The CX-3 crossover is not a priority for US consumers. The car does not behave well on rough exterior. On cars arise frequent breakdownsif you regularly drive outside the asphalt.
Toyota
In second place is again a Japanese company. The leader of the rating shouldn't be surprised here. It turned out to be a hybrid car Prius C. Tacoma was recognized as the worst project of Toyota. This huge pickup is clearly below the level of traditional North American passable cars and real workhorses.
Toyota's reliability index was an impressive 76. But even this did not allow the brand to take the lead, taking the first line of the rating.
Lexus
Toyota shouldn't worry too much about the 2nd place, since the premium subsidiary of the concern was still recognized as the leader of the rating. It was Lexus that turned out to be the highest quality and most reliable manufacturer according to research from Consumer Reports.
Moreover, the GX SUV is called the best model. IS is considered the most unsuccessful project.
As for the Lexus' overall reliability index, it reached 78.
The quality of a car is determined by many parameters. But it is impossible to give an objective assessment of the quality of a car that has just been purchased or that has only recently been released from the assembly line.
True indicators of quality, reliability and trouble-free operation appear after at least 1-2 years of operation. Better yet, analyze cars with a mileage of more than 100 thousand kilometers and an age of 3 years or more.
It is then that the official guarantee ends, the main components begin to wear out, the first signs of factory defects appear. The owner's attitude to vehicle, timely service and proper care... But if the car is initially of poor quality, even the most reverent and accurate operation will not allow the car to serve for many years and drive a huge distance. Sometimes the resource runs out already at 200 thousand kilometers, while the true favorites and leaders in quality quietly drive 300-500 thousand kilometers. before the first major renovation. Moreover, it is planned.
Each of us has our own reliability rating based on personal experience, stories of relatives, friends, acquaintances, read and seen on the Internet. Someone is sure that the most reliable are Japanese cars, another convinces that the “Japanese”, on the contrary, have lost ground and now “the Koreans rule”, and the “expert” laughs at them, believing that there was nothing better than the “Germans”, no and never will. After a moment's thought, everyone will name the “most reliable” brand. And having strained - also a model.
However, all this is just a personal opinion. A more authoritative opinion is insurance and statistical agencies, large auto publishers that study the reliability of cars using their own methods and regularly publish. The most popular are TÜV Report; DEKRA Used Car Report; ADAC Car Reliability Ratings; Warranty Direct Reliability Index. Top-100 UK Cars; Consumer Reports: 10 Most Reliable Cars; Consumer Reports: 30 Best Used Cars; J.D. Power and Associates Dependability Study ... These are German, British and American sources.
The compilers of the ratings not only interview the owners of cars of different years of production, but also analyze the insured events, the service history of each car. For example, the German Technical Inspection Association (TUV) collects data from ten million vehicles year after year, and each vehicle is evaluated according to a hundred parameters. Another German Automobile Inspectorate (DEKRA) has one and a half times more sample. The ADAC Automobile Club has 18 million members from across Europe. This is a huge array of data that allows you to identify, among other things, the real percentage of breakdowns (malfunctions).
Attempts to compile such ratings have been made in Russia as well. However, this work is too large-scale, complicated and expensive, and the market has been in a fever for many years in a row: not only brands / models and dealerships appear, disappear and transform, but also representations, so we do not yet have a trustworthy Russian rating of car reliability.
We have to compare the available ratings and exclude. The rest can be counted on one hand - that's why we don't divide them into classes. Yes, it is clear that some of them differ from European and especially American versions, so we are talking about the general level of reliability, regardless of the place of production and market.
We take into account that we, in Russia, have special operating conditions. And we remember the words of Winston Churchill about three types of lies (lies, blatant lies and statistics). Therefore, the rating obtained is not only informational, but also entertaining.
Reliability- the property of an object to preserve in time within the established limits the values of all parameters characterizing the ability to perform the required functions in specified modes and conditions of use, maintenance, storage and transportation (www.wikipedia.org)
5th and 4th places. Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4
Japanese crossovers are the best answer to "couch experts" who assure that "Japanese women are not the same." Eternal rivals Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 consistently occupy good places in reliability ratings - usually not among the leaders, but somewhere in the middle. So, in the fresh TUV rating, the Honda CR-V is in 21st place with 4% of breakdowns at 43 thousand kilometers. It has exactly the same percentage of breakdowns at 35 thousand, and the crossover is on the 23rd line. In the UK Top 100 UK Cars ranking, both models figure in the middle of the ranking, and here the Honda CR-V has a higher reliability level than the Toyota RAV4.
And in the What Car rating? in the SUV class, these competitors, on the contrary, took the lead, having changed places. The first place is taken by the RAV4 with 99.5% reliability, the second is the petrol CR-V of 2012–2018 with 98.7%. In any case, both are worthy of attention as acquisition candidates. And in order not to be disappointed in all reliability ratings at once, do not skimp on a thorough comprehensive diagnostics of the car you like.
3rd place. Audi Q3
Ranked by TUV crossover Audi ranks fifth with a surprisingly low percentage of breakdowns - 2.9% for 44 thousand km. Last year, the Q3 was ranked first in the J.D. Power and Associates ranking of premium compact crossovers. This makes the Q3 an attractive buy (assuming you have a minimum of 2.3 million for such a car). The Audi Q3 also occupies a good position in the What Car? - third place in the family SUV class. But clarification is required here: we are talking about cars with gasoline engines. The diesel version was only in 15th place. However, this is already exotic here.
2nd place. Lexus gx
The long-liver of reliability ratings is the mid-size premium SUV Lexus GX, a "brother" with a petrol V8. He is called the leader and J.D. Power and Associates, and Consumer Reports, noting that it is well ahead of its closest competitors. And the brand itself has been leading the American reliability ratings for the ninth year in a row. By the way, in current rating J.D. Power is followed by Porsche. And in the same class for the GX goes. Another Lexus, the ES, leads the compact premium car segment.
Alas, in our country, an SUV with an almost 300-horsepower engine, with a price of under 5 million, few can afford. And those who drive such cars in Russia are likely to confirm the words of their American colleagues. I wonder if the new generation of the SUV, which has recently begun to be sold in Russia, will be just as reliable? As they say, time will tell. Most likely - yes, since the main units of the car remained the same.
1st place. Porsche 911
In the TUV rating, the German sports car occupies the first line with 2.5% of breakdowns with an average mileage of 26 thousand kilometers. Yes, a little for three years. But, firstly, very few people even in Germany drive a Porsche every day, and secondly, 911s are obviously not purchased for "vegetable" driving, and with such a load, the mileage can be safely tripled.
What is especially important: it has been on the first lines of reliability ratings for many years. But more importantly, this model is also the leader in the rating among older cars: from 4 to 5 years old, from 6 to 7 years old, from 8 to 9 years old, from 10 to 11 years old. So if you ever save up for such a Porsche, buy it at least ten years old. Moreover, the owners of this model almost never save on maintenance - which also has a positive effect on the reliability rating. Rather, it is a guarantee of leading positions, along with the quality of components, assembly, and after engineering solutions that ensure reliability.
Almost anyone can walk more than 300,000 km without major investments and overhaul. This does not mean, of course, that it is a good idea to run the car for such a long time. Despite the possible minimum number of breakdowns, cars with a mileage of more than 300,000 km are not entirely cost-effective means of transportation.
But still we repeat, almost any modern car is able to roll its owner for a long time, and so that he does not bring unpleasant surprises, he needs to be kept in the necessary shape for the long term. Simply follow the operating instructions, solve minor problems in a timely manner as they arise, keep the car clean and thanks to this the car will repay you with reliability, well-being and a consistently beautiful appearance.
To increase the chance of a good outcome, below you will list models that are reliable but also very safe. These cars were rated by the owners as the highest, which allowed them to enter the list of cars that are likely to travel more than 300,000 km without overshadowing the owners with unexpected unpleasant surprises.
Among the cars are listed as and. Without exception, all models were recommended by Consumer Reports. CR tests were carried out on new cars, which means that they are not only reliable, but also perfectly passed all tests arranged by the specialists from. This twice confirms their reliability and the quality of these vehicles.
