I am a happy man. Because one of the first (with the factory index FB), the assembly of which has just begun at the plant in St. Petersburg. For this, I had to fly to St. Petersburg and put up with the fact that it is still allowed to drive on public roads only in camouflaged cars.

My assessments can hardly be taken as the ultimate truth. I took a ride at all, the new cars were from a pre-production batch (one with a mileage of about 50 thousand kilometers), and camouflage, in addition to hiding the body contours, also creates a noticeable background noise at high speed. Nevertheless, there are some observations - especially since I managed to jump from to a new one and back.

Has your character changed?

So the big question is: Has the character of the new Rio changed? The answer is unequivocal: yes! The reconfigured electric power steering, the new geometry of the front suspension (in particular, the angle of inclination of the steering axis of the wheel is increased by half a degree) and the modernized rear suspension, in which the shock absorbers are almost vertical, did their job. If the old Rio just rides with dignity, then the new one has a little bit of life that will obviously delight active drivers. The beginner feels better "on the steering wheel", more confidently holds the high-speed line and is more willing to rebuild following the steering wheel turns. Damn it, before such revelations for inexpensive Kia was not found!

But I will not over-praise, because not everything is clear. Firstly, it seemed to me that in extreme corners the Rio too willingly falls into a skid, noticeably squatting on a loaded rear wheel. But this has yet to be rechecked on commercial vehicles. In addition, three more people were traveling with me from the factory, so the load was noticeable.

You have to pay for the excitement, and you know what - smoothness. The new Rio is a little tougher, there is a slight itch on the steering wheel (its echoes are noticeable on the pedals), the noise level from the road has slightly increased. Is it bad? Decide for yourself. For me, a better understanding of the car is more important than a slight loss of comfort.

And the good news is that the 6-speed automatic was reconfigured. Koreans say that this is a new generation box, although it is more correct to talk about modernization. On the old Rio 1.6, with more or less active driving, the gas pedal has only two positions: either the entire working stroke, when practically nothing happens, or the position "almost to the floor" when the machine suddenly wakes up and convulsively pushes the lower gear. Nervous, tattered ride. And on a new car, this relationship is more linear: pushing - accelerating. I pressed harder - the box went one step lower, the car went even faster. More convenient, clearer, more comfortable and ultimately safer.

If we are already talking about units, it's time to remind that the new Rio is practically the twin brother of Solaris. Therefore, the engines are the same: 1.4 liters (100 HP and 132 N ∙ m) and 1.6 liters (123 HP and 156 N ∙ m). Both engines will be mated to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. My choice is 1.6 with a "handle": a great pair!

Factory people assure that the car has noticeably increased in size, but this is not entirely true. Who will notice the 23mm increase in length? It can be reached with other bumpers. By the way, the Rio is 5 mm shorter than the new Solaris, although technically the cars are extremely similar. Why? I say because of the bumpers.

The wheelbase has grown by 30 mm - up to 2600 mm. Now this is more serious. But here you need to return to Solaris, which has the same wheelbase - and how can it be different if the "cart" is the same?

The stated clearance is a decent 160 mm for this class. I did not check it, because the cars at my disposal were unprotected engine compartment, namely, it, as a rule, determines the lowest point. Let's take a freight vehicle a little later and deal with this issue in detail.

Among other important decisions for our motorists, I would like to point out the fuel tank increased to 50 liters (+7 liters). The washer reservoir has also become more capacious: before it was 4-liter, but now its volume is 4.6 liters. This is a small victory, but why was it not immediately brought to 5 liters, so that the contents of a standard canister could fit into the tank?

IN engine compartment everything is organized very neatly and thoughtfully: easy access to battery, to the neck of the washer fluid reservoir and to the oil plug. Even the light bulbs in the headlights are convenient to change - I checked.

Especially for Russia

Have you noticed that I didn't even say a word about design? There will be a lot of disputes (some will like it, others will not), and I do not want to act as an arbitrator. I can only say that all the spy photos that have flashed on the Internet so far can be forgotten: the front bumper of our car has its own - it turned out a kind of combination of Chinese kia sedan K2 with bumpers from the European hatchback Rio. Although this is not an entirely accurate description! Our Rio was created specifically for the Russian market, and many units and individual parts were adjusted to our requirements. What if a brake disc has similar dimensions but different characteristics - is it the same part? As an engineer, my answer is no.

Live Rio looks more interesting than in photographs. The decision to visually combine the taillights seems to me to be extremely successful. And the "boomerangs" in the bumpers are quite appropriate. And the interior is really good! The new Rio blurs the line between Class B and C cars: the quality of the finish will be the envy of others more expensive cars... And it's good that the Koreans have finally left the dubious Asian lines: a moderate European austerity for the machine.

Although it was not without oddities. For example, Koreans sacredly keep the custom to place "jerks" of locks of the gas tank flap and trunk at the driver's feet. Well, let it be, there must be something family.

The Rio's equipment is rich. It is clear that there are airbags, a dynamic stabilization system, air conditioning (or climate control), power windows, heated exterior mirrors, two-stage heating rear seat, tire pressure monitoring system and ERA-GLONASS. But that's not all. The Rio can be equipped with a 7-inch multimedia system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (navigation makes routes based on traffic jams), there is a rear-view camera and even a side light when cornering. And among the special features is a leather interior, which is not available. It is clear that this is the so-called eco-leather (we simply call it leatherette), but some will want this too. I prefer fabric seats - they are more comfortable and more pleasant, even in hot or cold weather.

How much is?

At the beginning of my story, I, apparently, got excited about the "main question." Distinct handling is great, but not everyone is touched by it. But everyone is interested in the price. And in this matter there is still complete uncertainty.

The Koreans say that sales will begin in the third quarter of this year. And the third quarter - here it is, knocking on the door. July? August? September? So far, silence, although August looks like the most likely solution. (The press release that Kia's Russian dealership circulated on June 23 at 1:00 pm confirmed August. Approx. ed.) About prices - not a word. But you do not need to be a visionary to predict with an accuracy of 99.9% that the price of Rio will not go far from Solaris, prices for which range from 625 thousand rubles to a million with a little tail, if we consider a fully packed car.

Will there be a crossover?

And a few more words for those who drive crossovers or still only dream of all-wheel drive. All the talk is about small crossover Kia you can safely fold - we will not have one in the near future. A facelifted Creta with Kia logos will only harm the brand, as everyone will perceive such a car as a secondary. And it's not a fact that now in our market there is room for two identical crossovers: it is possible to sell Cretu in large quantities, but two identical cars will not find twice as many customers - internal cannibalism is inevitable, which Koreans do not want.

Moreover, the plant's capabilities are limited - it is already working to its fullest: five days a week, three shifts. This is the most efficient car production in the country, but its capacity is almost completely selected. Kia can only produce about a hundred thousand cars a year here - and the question is how to distribute this volume between different models... Produce two perfectly different cars in this situation, it is economically unprofitable.

Do you understand what I mean? In addition to the sedan, in a few months, the Rio hatchback will enter the assembly line, which, if everything goes according to plan, will be offered in a raised "crossover" version. Together, the sedan and hatchback will select the entire production quota. So what is next…

Then everything will depend on you, dear readers... You are not only readers, but also buyers! If in the foreseeable future, along with the growth of the market (and such is outlined), sales kia cars in Russia, they will rise to at least 200 thousand per year, the Koreans will have a serious reason to think about building a new plant, since there is a site near the existing Hyundai plant - it was originally envisaged. In my life it already happened once. Outside the windows of the conference room, the Neva water splashed, a dozen brand new Kia Rio were standing in the parking lot, and on the podium - enthusiastically, not hiding pride - a company representative told how much their car had changed for the better. Yes, all this has already happened, only in 2011 at the presentation of the third generation Kia Rio. Then everything that was said from the podium was hard to believe. It was about some crazy sales figures in the future, about amazingly attractive loan programs, a competitive price and, of course, about the car itself, which at that time was really incredibly interesting for the buyer, both in appearance and in its consumer qualities.

Six years later, I am again told that what will be offered for a test drive today is undoubtedly the best that the market has to offer. After all, this is incomparable appearance, and improved dynamic characteristics, and a spacious interior, and an incredible package of options, and even something that has not been offered in cars of this class until now. And do you know what is most interesting? For some reason I already believe in all this. And first of all, because it is the third generation Kia Rio that now leads the market in terms of the number of cars sold in the B-segment, becoming the most popular car in Russia, and the number of cars produced has long exceeded half a million. Agree, against the background of this, it is foolish to believe that the fourth generation of the model has become worse. No, of course, this has happened in the history of the automotive industry, and more than once, but ...

The fact is that, creating the fourth Kia Rio, the company worked very closely with loyal customers, and therefore literally every little thing was taken into account that could either attract or, on the contrary, turn away a future buyer. Even possible options complete sets. By the way, all the configurations in which the car is presented on the market today, and there are six of them, are really alive. That is, among them there is no one in which it is impossible to buy a car, but it exists only on paper and solely so that the enticing "from" appears on the advertising banner. However, this very "from" really looks attractive, because for 699,900 rubles the consumer gets, albeit not much, but a fairly well-equipped car, and according to the characteristics with an engine of 100 hp. with., six-speed manual transmission, front airbags, stabilization systems, electric power steering, tire pressure system and even air conditioning. As they say, for happiness you will only need to buy a radio tape recorder. If we talk about the maximum configuration, then there is no need to buy anything else. For 989,900 rubles you get a fully equipped car with a 123 hp engine. with., a six-speed automatic and the maximum possible set of options, and some of them are not available to competitors today, leather interior, for example. It was on the car in the Premium configuration that I had to take a test drive.

But before we hit the road, let's make a ritual tour of the car. Yes, I must admit, the fourth generation Rio has become more noticeable. Designers with slight increases in dimensions of the car, and it became longer by 20 mm and wider by 40 mm, managed to give its appearance more significance. Really something, but now it looks the least like a budget sedan, especially in the maximum configuration: it is distinguished from the cheaper ones by increased to 16 inches alloy wheels and rear led lights... As for the projection headlights, foglights and LED running lights, they are already available with the Luxe trim level. By the way, the fact that all these three elements were not combined, as is now accepted by many automakers, is also the result of the work of marketers. The fact is that if all this were in one headlamp, its cost would increase significantly, and so each of these elements is an independent unit, and if necessary, they can be replaced separately. Both the manufacturer and the consumer will benefit if they have to order this or that element as a spare part.

The consumer also benefits from the fact that the wheelbase of the car has become larger. This is especially noticeable when you open the rear doors. The fact that there is more space in the second row will undoubtedly please those who like to travel by car with the whole family. Added legroom in the front. However, the first thing you notice when you sit in the driver's seat is that the interior has become wider. And even if this feeling is primarily visual, as already mentioned, the growth of the car in width was only 4 cm, but it is precisely the space with which the interior meets you that gives so much positive. For a "state employee" this is more than good. However, if you continue to study the interior further, it becomes clear that here the definition of a car class as a "state employee" is the least suitable. What the Kia Rio is now equipped with was not available to good "business" five years ago. Keyless entry system, climate control, 7-inch display on the center console, heated steering wheel and seats, and the second row too, auto light, bluetooth, rear view camera. All this makes the car very comfortable. But the comfort of a car is determined not only by how well it is packed with all sorts of options, but also by how it drives.

It was in order for it to drive well that the engineers first of all modernized the engines. Both the 1.4 and 1.6 engines now have a dual variable valve timing system CVVT at the inlet and outlet, thanks to which it was possible to optimize the torque characteristics. Motors start pulling at less RPM crankshaft, which had a positive effect on their elasticity and on the dynamics of the Rio. The car, as they say, went from the base. The suspension has been seriously changed. So, for the sake of improving directional stability, the castr of the front wheels was increased, and in order to reduce the likely breakdown, the rear shock absorbers were placed almost vertically. As the test drive showed, the car really holds the road very well, and feedback thanks to the electric booster, it really allows you to feel the car with your fingertips. But you still need to move the speed bumps very carefully. Even if you drive at a low speed, all one of the rear of the car throws up quite noticeably, which does not add comfort rear passengers - you can kiss your head against the ceiling.

I would also like to note that the efforts of the sound insulation engineers were not in vain. The car is really quiet even at speed, but you shouldn't rely on the fact that there will be exactly the same sound insulation as in a luxury car.

Whether the new Kia Rio has the same bright future as its predecessor, time will tell. Alas, it did not appear on the market in the best times for automakers, but I want to believe that after another six years I will sit at the presentation of the fifth generation of the model in the same way and listen in the same way that new model has become even better than before. Only then will she obviously move to another class.

The increased wheelbase made it possible to move back row a little back, which had a positive effect on the comfort of passengers. At the same time, there is more space in the driver's legs.

Verdict

In terms of all its consumer qualities, the new Kia Rio should undoubtedly repeat the success of its predecessor, however, the Russian car market is so unpredictable that we will still be careful to give accurate forecasts. Nevertheless, there are prerequisites for becoming a bestseller again.

The leader of the Russian market and the most popular car in class B, which displaced not only the Solaris co-platform from the pedestal, but also the Lada Granta. And the consumer properties of the new generation car have tightened even higher, but prices have also grown. Will the newbie be able to keep the lead? We will learn this over time. In the meantime, we took the new Rio for a test, as usual, in the most advanced configuration to evaluate its merits.

The new Rio has matured, added in size in almost all directions, has become more spacious, solid and modern, has acquired many new options. Solid design does not contain anything defiant and is designed for a mass audience. Of course, there has been continuity. Huge headlights, in the maximum configuration - with lenticular optics, cornering lights and strips of LED running lights. The rear LED lights are connected by a decorative lintel, which undoubtedly adds solidity to the stern.

The body has become stronger, the share of high-strength steels in the power structure has exceeded 50%. But the curb weight has also increased by 40 kg. The fuel tank has increased its volume by 8 liters to 50 liters. There are also changes in the chassis. The track became wider and the front levers were changed, which should give an improvement in directional stability and handling. For this, the castor is also increased by five tenths to 4.6 degrees - the angle of inclination of the axis of rotation of the front wheels. And at the back there is a new Elantra beam, where the shock absorbers are installed almost vertically, which should also have a positive effect on the ride quality of the Rio. The power steering gave way to an electromechanical unit mounted on the steering shaft. It's over modern solution should affect the information content of the steering wheel, especially in the near-zero zone.

The interior also has continuity, it looks more solid and modern, although everywhere there is tough plastic. It looks solid, fitted and everything is done to the conscience. Everything is functional and well thought out, as ergonomic as possible. The communication system with a 7-inch screen does not glare, has a good resolution and a fast processor, there is navigation. Rear view camera image with trajectory lines. Under the display, there is a convenient climate control panel and a block of buttons for new "warm options", in addition to heating the seats, a steering wheel heating appeared and windshield... A heated rear sofa is also available in the maximum configuration. At the very bottom of the center console - a pair of 12-volt sockets, the necessary connectors and a spacious niche for a mobile phone and small things.

The instrument cluster is the same as on Solaris, consisting of two circular scales and with an onboard computer monitor in the middle - exemplarily laconic and informative in a European style. The "sports" multifunctional steering wheel with comfortable tides in the grip area is sheathed in non-perforated leather, but very pleasant to the touch. On the spokes are buttons for controlling the onboard computer and audio system. To the left of the steering wheel, headlight range control, lighting adjustment dashboard, a tire pressure sensor and a button for disabling the stabilization system.

The reserves of steering wheel adjustments in two planes and the seat, including height, are quite enough for a driver of any height and build. The chair has an excellent profile and soft, comfortable padding, only the adjustment of the lumbar support is missing. In our case, it is sheathed with leatherette and this is the privilege of the top configuration, but I would probably refuse such a privilege in favor of a pleasant textile upholstery. The length-adjustable armrest with storage space is also quite functional. In their places, as expected, there are pockets in the doors, a pair of cup holders on the central tunnel, an eyeglass case in the ceiling panel next to the button of the now obligatory GLONASS system. Traditional glove box, everything is exactly as in Solaris, it turned out to be a primitive medium-sized container made of hard thin plastic without illumination and cooling. And the designers saved on a pocket in the back of the driver's seat.

The increase in the length of the base has a beneficial effect on the spaciousness of the rear sofa in the leg area, but the space above the head is back to back. The family trait is the low roof slope makes itself felt. But, in general, it is comfortable to sit, the backrest profile is good. There are three headrests, and there was no armrest, and there is no such thing, the B-class sedan is not supposed to be in terms of status. The trunk is of medium volume, but 20 liters less than before, which is apparently due to the design of the stern. Neat trim, belts pocket on the left, and full-size spare wheel under the floor. The backrest of the rear sofa reclines in parts, forming a step with the boot floor. There is a handle for closing the lid from the inside. And outside - only the peephole of the video camera. The trunk is opened with a lever from the salon.

On the test of the new Solaris, we have already noted the appearance of a 100-horsepower engine, which was not present in its predecessor. So on the Rio, the starter engine now fits into a more favorable taxation category, which is good news. Absolutely the right decision, the car has budget class there must be an initial low power engine for people who want to save on taxes and insurance. The example of the Koreans should be followed by other automakers who have chased the power. In particular, some AvtoVAZ models - Vesta and IxReyu - lack small motors. But on the test car, of course, there is a 123-horsepower 1.6-liter engine in combination with a 6-speed "automatic".

In terms of acceleration dynamics, as expected, there are no surprises - a moderately high-spirited engine, responsive to control actions with a well-tuned accelerator, paired with an “automatic” gear shifting adequately, do their job clearly and harmoniously. The engine now has a variable-length intake manifold and a second phase shifter, but this practically did not affect the characteristics and behavior. Average consumption fuel cannot be called modest, in the combined cycle it amounted to about 12 liters and this with one driver behind the wheel and at a fairly calm pace of driving, without fanaticism when pedaling. Maybe a 100-horsepower motor will still be more economical?

But the ride quality of the Rio is only pleasing, it has excellent ride quality and sufficient energy consumption, with well-coordinated kinematics of the front and rear suspension. The car confidently keeps a straight line at any speed. AND steering - simply exemplary: less than three revolutions from lock to lock, clear zero, optimal reaction force, precise reactions and excellent information content. You get pleasure from driving and feel reliability during sharp maneuvers, and the car successfully performs "rearrangement", that is, a detour of a sudden obstacle at a speed of over 80 km / h.

The sedan confidently goes through turns and clearly writes an arc with moderate rolls, and the stabilization system does not unnecessarily annoy, it turns on correctly and on time. By the way, despite the fact that there is a button to turn off the system, it only pushes the response threshold. There are no problems with visibility and brakes, perhaps, the rear-view mirrors would like to be larger. Good ergonomics, a good chassis, and as for noise insulation, it seems that here it is a little better than in Solaris, although the soundproof mat is inside there is no hood here either. And additional "Shumka" also does not hurt.

As for driving on dirt roads and rough terrain, this is still not the Rio's strong point. Declared ground clearance - 160 mm, but in reality, it is no more than 150, and in some places, it seems, even less. But even this is not the main problem, the front overhang is too long and it is as easy as shelling pears to catch a bump with the edge of the front bumper, even in a seemingly harmless place. So, for regional destinations, Rio, as well as Solaris, is not the best option. Otherwise, everything is wonderful.

And what definitely makes the Rio preferable to the Solaris is that the 5-door hatchback remains in the Kia range. Dealers have not yet named the timing of its appearance, but it will definitely be. So, those 20% of buyers who preferred hatchbacks now have no choice - only Rio. And presumably, the hatchback will be more affordable than a sedan in a similar configuration.

Summing up, it's safe to say that the new Rio has become better in almost all respects. Now it is not just an ordinary B-class sedan, but one of the undoubted leaders in consumer qualities. And again, he may be hindered from becoming a segment leader, perhaps by the increased cost. The price of the Rio starting configuration is higher than that of Solaris - from 670 thousand for a car with a 100-horsepower engine and a "stick". The next equipment with heated front seats and an audio system is 35 thousand more expensive. At the time of the test, the minimum price for a car with an automatic transmission was 770 thousand. With 1.6 engine on "mechanics" - from 755 thousand, the same with "automatic" is 40 thousand more expensive. The cost of the Rio in the maximum configuration starts at 990 thousand, plus packages of additional options, which, as a result, significantly exceeds a million. And this is already beyond the reasonable bounds of the B-class, no matter how good the car is! In this price category - the patrimony of cars of other standard sizes.

In the meantime, we are waiting for a hatchback, but in a minimal salary, this is, for me personally, an interesting option!
