After leaving Yerevan, driving along the highway and mountain serpentine, I managed, according to the trip computer, 10.8 liters.

The suspension is soft in the American way - long-travel and comfortable. You can only hear the muffled slaps of tires at the seams and joints of the asphalt. The manufacturer calls the shock absorbers amplitude-reactive. Do not be alarmed: they only reduce body sway on large bumps and in bends. The Pilot does an excellent job with patching and fine shot. On bumps and pits, too, no problem. At low speeds, the Pilot slides smoothly over obstacles, and the suspension travel seems to be huge. But, as it turned out, the compression stroke is not that great. Through ridges on the field and shear asphalt waves - only crawling. If you go faster, expect blows during the rebound.

The new all-wheel drive transmission with individual rear wheel clutches allows for dynamic torque distribution. In theory, it is better than traditional 4 × 4 schemes on asphalt and not inferior to them off-road. But in practice, diagonal hanging is not so easy to handle. The test route with a deep ford, ascents and potholes was passed without remarks. And after the finish one front wheel on a small dirt ridge, it ran into a bump, the other skidded - and no clutches helped the rear wheels to push the car forward. Traction control system does not allow you to drive with active slipping! I had to take it back.

And when on the sandy expanses I turned the steering wheel a little steeper, the Pilot began to briskly lose speed. Gas to the floor, but it does not go! I tried it in different modes - in vain. None of the traction stabilization and traction control systems is completely disabled and chokes the engine. How so? Honda said that flaws are possible on pre-production models - they say, everything will work as it should on commercial vehicles.

The Pilot is a mighty crossover, but not a mighty rogue. On the ground, it really lacks manual gear shifting. And try not to get stuck on it. Why? No rear towing eye! You need to pull - what to cling to? The driver should not count on the seven pushers that are sitting in the "apartment". They say, and these are pre-production costs: there will be either an eyelet or a hitch. A pair of the unit will be a six-speed automatic. The tandem proved to be incredibly well-coordinated: no jerking at the start, no jerking when changing gears ... Literally one mechanism! Although not from the world of sports - despite the rather modest mass for an SUV, the tandem carries a huge colossus, as they say, without a spark. Accelerating, every time you think: if only here ... no, not a global V6 with a capacity of 300 "horses". Diesel! At the same time, the flow rate would have been reduced much more significantly than with the introduction of a cylinder shutdown system.

Off-road behavior

The past generation Pilot has been criticized for its modest off-road potential. The guys from Honda did not step on this rake a second time. New system all-wheel drive is not built on the basis of an electromagnetic clutch in rear axle, but using everything in the same axle instead of a differential ... two clutches! One activates the rear right wheel as needed, the other the left. They turn on very comfortably, smoothly. And very to the point: on the road, the system helps a huge SUV turn with traction, loading the outer rear wheel with a moment. And off-road ...

We had a chance to climb a steep mountain on a wet rocky trail on the Pilot, force clay ascents after rain, loosen sand on the beach, ride along a shaky coastline on the water ... There are 12 cupholders for eight people, three-zone climate control, five pairs of Isofix mounts, a 9-inch screen entertainment system with a wireless remote control for the second and third rows, four USB inputs, two HDMI connectors, as well as headphone inputs, 12V, AUX and RCA.

With a coolly thought-out interior, bewilderment from electronics is off scale! Cruise control does not display the speed and does not automatically adjust it based on the overall flow rate. The dashboard reflects in the sun, and it takes getting used to the scales and the chaotic set of readings on the on-board computer screen. It's good that the speedometer is placed in a separate "window". Multimedia with a 7-inch touchscreen is frustrating in almost all respects: graphics, interface, efficiency. There are all-round cameras and an additional camera in the right mirror, peeping into the blind spot. Conveniently! But the image quality is such that you have to stare at the screen.
