Even before the collapse of the USSR, Belarusian MAZ trucks gained a reputation as reliable, unpretentious and powerful heavy-duty vehicles. The MAZ-6303 model is no exception. The car, despite the outdated design, relatively low level of comfort and “poor” interior equipment, is still actively used in many areas of human activity - construction and cargo transportation. The “secret of success” of the machine lies in its low price, excellent maintainability, simplicity and economy in maintenance, power and reliability.

History of creation

The backstory begins in 1965. Then the first developments began to appear for the creation of three-axle trucks with increased carrying capacity.

The first prototype of the new type of trucks was embodied in the MAZ-516 model, as well as the MAZ-520 and MAZ-515 truck tractors. A little later, from the Minsk conveyor automobile plant the MAZ-514 model came down. The cars were quite promising, however, not without a large number flaws. For example, it was experimentally found that the increased carrying capacity of a car required modernization of the engine, chassis, improvement of the rear suspension, and so on.


The updated improved MAZ-516 began production in 1969. Until 1981, various modifications of this truck were produced. Models 515 and 520 never entered serial production, however, a number of developments, for example, the steering concept, smoothly "migrated" to the MZKT-6515.

Over the next 10 years, the designers of the Minsk Automobile Plant have designed multifunctional, universal and powerful trucks, as a result of which, by the beginning of the 90s of the 20th century, MAZ could boast of a whole series of successful new generation truck models. Thanks to this, the enterprise not only survived the collapse of the country, but was also able to independently establish and enter the sales markets. The plant was competitive, and the release of a new model at that time flatbed truck MAZ-6303 was another confirmation of this.

Attention! The car was designed in accordance with European quality requirements, because of this, the heavy-duty car was sold not only in the countries of the former USSR, but also in European countries.

Loading platform and wheel arrangement

The car received a 6x4 wheel arrangement, subsequently, on its basis, the MAZ-63168 (6x4) and MAZ-6317 (6x6) special vehicles were created.


As for the cargo platform of the vehicle, its design allows the vehicle to be used universally. For example, timber trucks (model MAZ-630326), as well as tractors for the transportation of full-fledged road trains, with a maximum carrying capacity of up to 67 tons, are being created on the base.

MAZ-6303 is equipped with cargo platforms curtain, awning and side types. The truck is equipped with different versions of platform-vans, based on a cargo chassis. Truck cranes with increased carrying capacity (maximum rate of 25 tons), multi-lifts, dump platforms for metal transportation, tank cars, tow trucks, log trucks and other similar equipment are being installed.

Cabin

The machines are equipped with large and small cabins. The first is installed on long-haul trucks, truck tractors, and vehicles for the transportation of goods over long distances. There are two berths in the cabin of increased capacity. The small cab is installed on special vehicles, as well as on trucks for transportation of goods over short distances.

The MAZ-6303 model has a cabover-free layout, in order to gain access to the engine, the driver needs to tilt the cab forward. The process is facilitated by the presence of a hydraulic system.


The car has a fairly roomy and spacious interior, which provides an excellent overview of the road space, the interior is not susceptible to vibrations and noise penetration. Thermal insulation is also excellent. The disadvantages of the interior of the truck include the poor quality of finishing materials, imperfect build quality.

In the standard configuration of the cabin, there are suspension seats for the driver and passenger, seat belts, main and autonomous heaters. It is easy to turn the steering wheel and press the pedals, which allows you to work on the truck for a long time without getting tired.

Attention! The design of the MAZ-6303 truck implies the presence of a heating tap under the cab, because of this, the process of turning on the heaters is rather inconvenient - the driver needs to get out of the truck, raise the cab, and unscrew the valve to allow heat to enter the cabin.

Engine and gearbox

The truck is equipped with 4-stroke 8-cylinder V-shaped power plants YaMZ-238. Depending on the engine modification, the motor power is from 170 to 400 horse power... The engines are quite economical. So, in mixed driving mode, the engine consumes 27.5 liters for every 100 kilometers diesel fuel... When driving in the city, this figure increases to 40 liters, and on the highway, decreases to 25 liters, respectively.


The engines can boast of excellent truck acceleration dynamics. So, with an activated speed limiter, MAZ-6303 can accelerate to 85 kilometers per hour, and without a limiter, up to 100 kilometers per hour. The motors are reliable, unpretentious, maintainable and comply with the EURO-3 environmental safety class.

As for the transmission of the truck, various versions of the YaMZ-238 gearboxes are installed. Gearbox modifications depend on the modification of the motor used. The car is equipped with 8-speed mechanical boxes gear shifting and forward gear synchronizers. The model is also equipped with 4-speed manual transmission modifications. Such devices are additionally equipped with a dual-range planetary range to increase torque.

Attention! The dual-band planetary range is used in the design of heavy vehicles operating in difficult road conditions - the device expands the standard capabilities of the installed gearbox, and allows you to increase the number of gears without interfering with the transmission design.

Chassis (suspension, brakes, steering)


MAZ-6303, regardless of modification, is equipped with:

  1. Dry double-disc friction clutch equipped with a pneumatic drive booster to disengage the clutch;
  2. The front suspension consists of two longitudinal springs and telescopic shock absorbers. Also, the mechanism provides for the presence of a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension installed on the model is spring-balanced;
  3. The car is equipped with a two-stage steering gear equipped with a gear pair, an integrated distributor and a helical gear;
  4. The car is equipped with pneumatic brakes, with separate drive for each wheel. The trailer or semi-trailer of the MAZ-6303 truck has a two-wire drive, the manufacturer provides for installation electronic system ABS, the parking brake is equipped with a pneumatic drive, and the rear wheel drive works in conjunction with spring electric accumulators. Design auxiliary brake consists of a compression type mechanism equipped with movable flaps in the exhaust system of the truck.

Prices

Excellent technical characteristics, reliability, maintainability and efficiency make the car quite popular not only in Russia, but also abroad. With all its positive features, the model can boast of a low cost, basic configuration a new truck will cost buyers from 1.9 million rubles.


Used cars will cost a little less - depending on the year of manufacture, technical and external condition, modification, and equipment, you can purchase for an amount from 250 thousand to 1 million rubles.

The truck has been produced since the early 90s, but it still retained its relevance, largely due to its advantages and low price. Even used cars are strong enough and can last for more than one year. The disadvantages of the car, first of all, lie in the low quality of painting, poor assembly of interior panels and the use of cheap materials in the interior design of the cab. MAZ-6303 can hardly be called a premium truck, however, it is an inexpensive, versatile, unpretentious, economical and reliable workhorse, capable of easily performing the tasks assigned to it.
